In 2016 96% of our Year 1 children passed the National Phonics Screening Check
In the EYFS and Key Stage 1 all children participate in a daily phonics session of 20 minutes. We follow the 'letters and sounds' programme for phonics and have a multi-sensory and kinaesthetic approach to teaching and learning.
We have a policy of 'stage not age' in our approach to the teaching of reading and phonics. Children will have reading material that is appropriate to their reading ability. All children take part in a daily guided reading session and there are many opportunities for shared, paired and individual reading.
In the early stages of reading children are guided to read phonically decodable books. All our reading books are banded into colours and the main reading schemes that we use are Rigby Rocket, Songbirds and Oxford Reading Tree.
Read on Get on is a national campaign to get all our children reading well by the age of 11. Just 10 minutes of reading a day can make all the difference
